COMMERCE COMMITTEE DEMOCRATS
Congressman John D. Dingell, Ranking Member
Statement of Congressman John D. Dingell
March 27, 1996

We face a simple choice. We can free millions of Americans from the terror of losing their health insurance. Or we can stage a wonderful piece of theater that will sate the appetites of the special interests, but never become law.

Who are these interests, and what do they want? One insurance company wants Medical Savings Accounts that will benefit the wealthy and healthy at the expense of the ill and middle class. This is a company that has given generously to the Republican Party and GOPAC. This is a company that abruptly cancels the policies of sick people, uses every pretext to avoid paying legitimate claims, and then, when challenged, threatens to stop writing insurance policies altogether.

Other seekers of special favors are standing on line: those who want to repeal the protections that guarantee accurate lab results, and the safeguards that prevent scoundrels from selling senior citizens phony Medigap policies.

Our sole and primary and paramount goal should be to help people when they lose or change jobs or when they or a loved one contracts cancer or another disease. This should not become an auction for the special interests.
