COMMERCE COMMITTEE DEMOCRATS
Congressman John D. Dingell, Ranking Member

STATEMENT OF CONGRESSMAN JOHN D. DINGELL
April 29, 1998

What Greg Ganske and his colleagues are doing this morning should serve as a powerful rebuttal to those who think the Congress is full of posturers more interested in striking a position than in passing legislation. With the support of my Republican colleagues, we have a real chance and a bright opportunity to pass the Patient's Bill of Rights and present the President with legislation that he will sign.

This legislation has the support of a broad range of organizations, from the AFL-CIO to the AMA. I'm pleased that we're joined this morning by representatives from the AARP, Families USA, the American Nurses Association, and the AMA. They are but a handful of the people who helped us draft this bill, and who want to set minimum standards for quality and patient protections in managed care.

It takes a great deal of courage for my Republican friends to stand here and publicly announce their support for the Patient's Bill of Rights. I want each and every one of them to know how much and how deeply I appreciate their endorsements.
