House Commerce Committee Ranking Democrat John D. Dingell (MI) today sent letters to utility regulators and consumer advocates in four Midwest states seeking information about recent price spikes and supply shortages in electricity markets.

"The recent turmoil in Midwest electric markets serves as timely reminder of what is at stake in the debate on industry restructuring," Dingell said. "It behooves Congress to take the time to understand these events and determine their significance to make intelligent decisions about whether, when, and how to craft federal legislation to accelerate the pace of deregulation."

Attached is the text of the letter, which was sent to officials in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Wisconsin, as well as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in Washington.
