Chairman Murphy to Preview Forum on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal Tuesday at 7:45 a.m.

The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations tomorrow will host a bipartisan forum, “After Newtown: A National Conversation on Violence and Severe Mental Illness.” The forum will feature leading national experts as well as several parents of children with mental disorders to explore issues related to severe mental illness and violence.

Before Congress turns to shaping federal policy, Rep. Tim Murphy wants lawmakers to gain a deeper understanding of mental health issues and to hear from people that have been affected.

That opportunity will come Tuesday, when the House Energy and Commerce Oversight Subcommittee, which Murphy chairs, hosts a forum on violence and severe mental illness. The event is part of the panel’s examination of mental health and other issues that have received attention since December’s elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

“I felt it was very important that people hear from those families who have dealt with the disease of mental illness and providers who have treated it so people clearly know what it is we’re facing,” Murphy, who worked as a psychologist before entering Congress, said in an interview. “And what we’re facing is huge.”

The Pennsylvania Republican has already held a closed-door session, which he likened to “Mental Health 101,” to provide committee members and policy staff with background information about the issue. At the Feb. 14 meeting, Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, and Harold Koplewicz, president of the Child Mind Institute, went over terminology so that members would understand diagnostic terms and other labels, Murphy said.
