OPINION: Energy and Commerce Committee Members Demand Answers on Obamacare Failures

October 22, 2013

In advance of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Thursday hearing on “PPACA Implementation Failures: Didn’t Know or Didn’t Disclose?” committee leaders have taken to the airwaves to discuss the multitude of problems with the president’s health care law. In an effort to better understand the “glitches” that have defined open enrollment, who is responsible, and when those involved identified the challenges that lay ahead, the committee will hear from four contractors on Thursday. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is also confirmed to testify before the full committee next Wednesday, October 30, 2013. A sampling of what the members have had to say is below:

Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Tim Murphy (R-PA) on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom

Murphy: “Either this whole administration that’s dealing with this is woefully ignorant of what’s going on, or they’re simply not telling us the truth.”

Energy and Commerce Committee Vice Chairman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) on CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer

Blackburn: “We want to know: How did it get so off track? … People are incredibly frustrated with this. They look at it as being another failure and another broken promise.”

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) on Fox News' Your World With Neil Cavuto

Scalise: “This is not some glitch. This is a national embarrassment. … This is a product that doesn’t work.”

Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) on CNN Newsroom with Carol Costello

Ellmers: “What we see right now is a stark and fatal flaw. This is a failure at the greatest level and should be a great embarrassment to the president and his administration. And someone needs to take responsibility for it.”

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) on Fox News’ On The Record with Greta Van Susteren

Kinzinger: “This isn’t just a website. This cost hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to build something that isn’t working.”
