Today the House of Representatives passed by a vote of 400-17 H.R. 3276, the American Medical Isotopes Production Act.  The bill will  provide the Department of Energy with new legal authority and funding to assist private sector projects in establishing a steady domestic supply of molybdenum-99 produced without use of highly-enriched uranium.

Molybdenum-99 is a crucial medical isotope used in 16 million medical procedures every year - mostly in diagnostic tests. There are currently no domestic producers of the isotope.  Because of technical problems at two of the five plants around the world that manufacture the isotope, the U.S. is facing a shortage.
