Survey: Obama’s ratings drop as gas price soar

A majority of Americans disapprove of the way President Barack Obama is handling the economy — with a record number who “disapprove strongly” — amid soaring gas prices and an uncertain fiscal future, a new Washington Post-ABC News survey out Monday found.

The poll found that 50 percent of those surveyed strongly disapprove of Obama’s economic performance — the highest in the poll’s history. A total of 59 percent gave the president negative marks on the economy.

With rising gas prices hitting Americans at the pump, 65 percent said they found Obama’s handling of the issue unsatisfactory. Of that number, 52 percent were said to “disapprove strongly” and only 14 percent “approve strongly” of Obama’s performance on gas prices…

Soaring prices at the pump are souring Americans on the economic recovery and hurting President Obama’s re-election bid. More than a third told the IBD/TIPP poll that the issue would affect their vote in the fall.

“Most Americans do not give President Obama good grades for handling rising gasoline prices. Only 24% give him an A or B; 46% give him a D or F,” said Raghavan Mayur, president of TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence, which conducted the poll…

With the price of gas becoming an increasingly critical issue on the campaign trail, President Obama admitted today that “as long as gas prices are going up, people are going to feel like I’m not doing enough.”

“I understand that, because people get hurt when they’re going to the gas station and seeing those prices rise every day,” Obama told ABC’s Orlando, Fla., affiliate WFTV.

The president’s comments came in response to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll which found 65 percent of Americans disapprove of how the president is handling the rising price of gas, while just 26 percent approve…

Four years ago, presidential candidate Barack Obama held a photo-op news conference at a gas station near Indianapolis to decry the nation’s ineffective energy policy and complain about “gas that’s approaching $4 a gallon.”

At the time, the price of a gallon of regular unleaded at Joe’s Junction was $3.55.

Nowadays, the price of gas at the same station under President Obama has topped $3.80, nearly twice what it was when he took office, and presidential spokesman Jay Carney on Monday decried Republican presidential candidates who promise to lower the price at the pump. He said Mr. Obama won’t pander to voters that way…
