December 4, 2000

Mr. Roger Ailes
President
Fox News Channel
1211 Avenue of the Americas
New York, New York 10036

Dear Mr. Ailes:

As you know, this Committee is conducting an investigation into possible bias by the television networks in the timing of their "calls" of individual states for Governor George W. Bush. At a press conference held on November 16, 2000, by Rep. Billy Tauzin, chairman of the Telecommunications, Trade, and Consumer Subcommittee, only the times of these "calls" by CNN were listed. Since that time, we have received information that some of those times may have been incorrect.

In order to have more complete information prior to Committee hearings on this matter, we are requesting that you provide to us the following information (which we will share with Representative Tauzin):

1. The exact time at which your network received information from Voter News Service indicating that a state could be called for either Governor Bush or Vice President Gore.

2. The exact time at which your network called each state for Governor Bush or Vice President Gore.

3. The person or persons in charge of receiving information from the Voter News Service and recommending to network executives that a state be called for one of the candidates.

Please provide this information by Monday, December 11, 2000. If your staff has any questions or needs additional information, please have them contact Edith Holleman, minority counsel, at (202) 226-3400. Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

JOHN D. DINGELL
