Statement of Congressman John D. Dingell on
NHTSA Recall of Firestone Tires
"Fords decision earlier this year to recall all 15" and 16" Firestone
tires on its vehicles was an unarguably good one, as evidenced by the release of
todays National Highway Transportation Safety Administration defect findings. It has
taken government investigators five months to reach the same conclusion Ford reached last
spring when it placed consumer safety above profit. In addition to the 3.5 million
Firestone has agreed to recall due to the defects NHTSA found, it is also voluntarily
recalling 130,000 tires used on the Ford Ranger Pickups. I commend Firestone for taking
this step and Ford for exhibiting responsible corporate leadership in this matter."
