Statement of John D. Dingell on the Freedom Car January 9, 2002
"Im pleased the Administration has chosen to continue this important cooperation begun by the Clinton Administration and to build upon it. The auto industry is one of the most important components of the economic engine that drives this nation, and we must invest in its future. This is an ambitious undertaking that will require the sustained support and commitment of the Federal Government and the auto companies entering into this new partnership. Not only must new vehicle technology be developed, but a nationwide infrastructure must be established for making hydrogen fuel available. As in years past, Federal support will be a critical factor in the "Freedom Cars" success. But we need not wait for progress. It is important to note that immediate, substantial fuel economy improvements could be realized if clean diesel fuel were available in the U.S. as it is in Europe." - 30 - (Contact: Laura Sheehan, 202-225-3641)
