WASHINGTON, DC –Today Energy and Commerce Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) announced that after the committee received a briefing from Equifax, the committee will hold a hearing on the data breach compromising 143 million Americans’ personal data.
“This unprecedented data breach could impact tens of millions of Americans and raises serious questions about the security of our personal information online. After receiving an initial briefing from Equifax, I have decided to hold a hearing on the matter so that we can learn what went wrong and what we need to do to better protect consumers from serious breaches like this in the future.”
The committee will continue to receive briefings from Equifax and work with their leadership team to determine an appropriate hearing date. Energy and Commerce has jurisdiction over the Federal Trade Commission and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the agencies responsible for regulating data security.
