E&C’s Oversight Subcommittee to Hold Hearing on Public Health Risks of E-Cigarettes
Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chair Diana DeGette (D-CO) announced today that the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee will hold a hearing on Wednesday, September 25, on the public health impacts and regulatory authorities related to e-cigarette manufacturing, sales and use. Testimony will be provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state health officials.
“With more than 450 reported severe lung illnesses and six confirmed deaths linked to vaping across 33 states and one territory, we are greatly concerned that e-cigarette products continue to be disseminated and used while consumers lack information to evaluate the health implications of using these products,” Pallone and DeGette said. “This hearing is an opportunity to hear from federal agencies and key state leaders on the link between e-cigarettes and these life-threatening illnesses, the health impacts of these products and their appeal to young people.”
Additional details will be announced the week prior to the hearing.
