Pallone and Schakowsky on FTC’s Sunday Riley Settlement

Oct 22, 2019
Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Consumer Protection and Commerce Chair Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement today after the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a settlement with Sunday Riley Skincare and its CEO, Sunday Riley, for misleading consumers:

“We are disappointed that yet again the Federal Trade Commission chose not to use all the tools it has available to protect consumers from being duped by fake reviews.  Although it is clear that Sunday Riley intentionally engaged in an extensive fake review scheme intended to defraud customers, the settlement does not include any monetary compensation for consumers or penalties on the company.  Reviews are often the only protection consumers have in the highly unregulated cosmetics industry.  The FTC must take meaningful action to stop deceptive advertising, punish wrongdoers, and make defrauded consumers whole.  Instead, the message the FTC is sending with this settlement is that falsifying reviews and lying about product efficacy is a worthwhile business tactic.”
