Pallone Applauds Global Commitment to Invest in Clean Energy Research & Development
Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) issued the following statement today commending the Obama administration on the launch of Mission Innovation, which represents a landmark commitment by 20 countries and a group of 28 influential investors to accelerate public and private global clean energy innovation over the next five years:
“As historic climate talks begin today in Paris, the world is anticipating a new international agreement that will help to slow the pace of global climate change. While this will represent real progress in the global fight to address our climate crisis, we know that we must continue to work together after Paris if all nations are to successfully adapt to a warmer planet.
“The commitment by 20 nations to double their investments in clean energy research and development over the next five years sets the stage for the sustained effort to reduce carbon emissions worldwide. These investments will enable us to make even more progress beyond these negotiations in Paris. Additionally, the joint commitment by private investors in the Breakthrough Energy Coalition to take on the early development risks necessary to move new technologies forward further validates this ongoing effort.
“For decades, the United States has led the world in research and development. We have seen firsthand that when innovation thrives, it has the power to solve problems around the world and to create new industries and jobs right here at home. This landmark initiative continues that legacy, reasserting our nation as a leader in innovation and ensuring our place in the energy economy of the future.
“Today’s announcement of Mission Innovation is an encouraging signal to us all that the world is committed to a more sustainable energy future.”
