Pallone & Tonko on House Passage of the Lower Food and Fuel Costs Act

Jun 16, 2022
Press Release
Bill Includes Rep. Angie Craig’s Year-Round Fuel Choice Act of 2021, allowing for the Voluntary, Year-Round Sale of Gasoline Containing 15 Percent Ethanol

Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Environment and Climate Change Subcommittee Chairman Paul Tonko (D-NY) released the following statement today after the House passed the Lower Food and Fuel Costs Act by a vote of 221-204:

“At a time when Americans are paying record high prices for gas, Big Oil continues to exploit market instability caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to rake in record profits. Enough is enough. Today the House once again took action to alleviate the financial strain families are feeling at the pump. By allowing for a higher blend of ethanol in our gasoline – and allowing it to be sold year-round – Americans can rely more on homegrown biofuels that cost drivers about 40 cents less per gallon at the pump. This legislation will also insulate drivers from dramatic global price fluctuations since E-15 requires less oil.

“This action is a powerful tool in our fight against global oil price shocks and profiteering, and critically, is a cleaner fuel option that emits less carbon pollution. We’re glad the House took decisive, bipartisan action to make this homegrown fuel source more widely available in time for the summer driving season and are determined to keep working to lower prices for all Americans.”

H.R. 4410, the Year-Round Fuel Choice Act, was introduced by Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN). It combats recent fuel price hikes caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by allowing for the voluntary, year-round sale of gasoline containing 15 percent ethanol, known as E-15 or Unleaded 88 – a cleaner, cheaper fuel option that costs on average about 40 cents less per gallon and emits less carbon pollution than regular gas.
