Look Ahead: Committee Announces Schedule for Week of February 11

February 8, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce announced its hearing and vote schedule for the week of February 11, 2013. Beginning on Tuesday, the committee will reconvene its business meeting to consider the oversight plan for the 113th Congress. In hearings, the committee will examine influenza preparedness and reforming the physician payment system under Medicare. The committee will also explore opportunities and obstacles facing American manufacturers and will hear from state officials responsible for implementing state and federal environmental laws. The committee will also review the law granting satellite providers certain benefits and obligations in distributing broadcast programming. The hearings mark the launch of several major initiatives being undertaken by the committee, and will help set the stage for its work in the coming months.

On Tuesday, February 12, the full Energy and Commerce Committee will resume its business meeting to consider the committee’s oversight plan for the 113th Congress. An electronic copy of the oversight plan can be found on the Energy and Commerce Committee’s website here. A background memo, amendments, and votes will be available at the same link as they are posted.

On Wednesday, February 13, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing on “Influenza: Perspective on Current Season and Update on Preparedness.” The subcommittee has examined the roles of the agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services that are involved in influenza preparedness, including CDC and FDA, as well as manufacturers of vaccine and antiviral products that combat influenza. This hearing will provide an opportunity to hear from several of those agencies about the facts, statistics, and circumstances surrounding this year’s flu season as well as to discuss ongoing efforts at the federal level to prepare for and respond to future influenza outbreaks. A Majority Memorandum, a witness list, and testimony will be available here as they are posted.

Also on Wednesday, February 13, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will hold a hearing on “Satellite Video 101.” Portions of the law granting satellite providers certain benefits and obligations in distributing broadcast television programming expires December 31, 2014. The subcommittee will be holding a series of hearings to discuss whether to let the law expire, to reauthorize it, or to revise it. This hearing, the first in the series, will provide members with a basic review of the current state of the law. A Majority Memorandum, a witness list, and witness testimony will be available here as they are posted.

On Thursday, February 14, the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade will hold a hearing on “Our Nation of Builders: Manufacturing in America.” This will be the first installment of the subcommittee’s “Our Nation of Builders” hearing series to explore ways to make American manufacturing more competitive in the global marketplace and create jobs. Thursday’s hearing will feature testimony from manufacturers in the districts of subcommittee members, including representatives from 3M, Raytheon, Corning Inc., and other leading firms. A Majority Memorandum, a witness list, and witness testimony will be available here as they are posted.

Also on Thursday, February 14, the Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing on “SGR: Data, Measures and Models; Building a Future Medicare Physician Payment System.” The hearing will examine ways to reform Medicare physician payment. Earlier this week, the Energy and Commerce Committee joined with the Ways and Means Committee to provide an update on the committees' collaborative efforts in this area, including release of a framework for reform and a request for feedback from interested parties. A Majority Memorandum, a witness list, and witness testimony will be available here as they are posted.

On Friday, February 15, the Subcommittee on Environment and the Economy will host a hearing on “The Role of the States in Protecting the Environment Under Current Law.” The subcommittee will hear from state officials responsible for implementing state and federal environmental laws, including state regulations of solid waste, drinking water, and hydraulic fracturing. Witnesses will include representatives from the Environmental Council of the States, the Association of State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials, the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators, the Ground Water Protection Council, and the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission. A Majority Memorandum, a witness list, and witness testimony will be available here as they are posted.
