House Sends Obamacare Repeal to President
WASHINGTON, DC – The House of Representatives today approved H.R. 3762, the Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act. With today’s vote, the House is sending a bill that repeals Obamacare to the president’s desk. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) applauded today’s vote to pave the way for an opportunity to institute real, patient-centered reforms. Upton is a co-author of the Patient Choice, Affordability, Responsibility, and Empowerment (CARE) Act – a bicameral legislative plan that repeals Obamacare and replaces it with commonsense, patient-focused reforms that reduce health care costs and increase access to affordable, high-quality care. Upton co-authored the plan with Senate Finance Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC).
“The current health law relies on outdated programs of the past and forces a one-size-fits-all approach on our states that is unresponsive to patient needs,” said Chairman Upton during debate on the House floor. “These obsolete ideas have failed people time and time again – the public deserves a fresh, forward-looking approach that embraces 21st century innovation. We’ve got a solution to restore America’s health care freedom – to put Obamacare in the rear view mirror and replace it with better health care solutions like the Patient CARE Act. It’s time to put patients first and let them make the choices, not the government.”
The Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act now heads to the president where a veto has been threatened.
The Patient CARE Act provides a legislative roadmap to repeal the president’s health care law and replace the law with commonsense measures that would:
- Establish sustainable, patient-focused reforms
- Modernize Medicaid to provide better coverage and care to patients
- Reduce defensive medicine and rein in frivolous lawsuits
- Increase health care price transparency to empower consumers and patients
- Reduce distortions in the tax code that drive up health care costs
- Empower small businesses and individuals with purchasing power
