#SubEnvironment to Examine PFAS Water Contamination

Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – The Subcommittee on Environment, chaired by Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), announced today a hearing for Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Perfluorinated Chemicals in the Environment: An Update on the Response to Contamination and Challenges Presented.”

Next week, #SubEnvironment will examine per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are part of a group of chemicals used for decades in manufacturing, firefighting, and thousands of common household and other consumer products. Many people have come in contact with one or more PFAS in their lifetime and there is evidence that some PFAS are associated with certain health problems.

“Every family deserves to know the truth about what is going on regarding PFAS. It has been in the news and there is too little information about the health risks and ways to address it in the environment,” said #SubEnvironment Chairman Shimkus. “With all the questions about PFAS exposure impacts swirling around, it’s critical that we investigate the facts, the real risks, and what it takes to protect the public and clean up the contamination. I look forward to next week’s discussion to shed light on the PFAS problem.”

The Majority Memorandum, witness testimony, and live webcast will be made available as they are posted on the committee’s website HERE.
