Chairs Rodgers, Griffith Announce O&I Subcommittee Hearing with HHS IG

Washington, D.C. — House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Chair Morgan Griffith (R-VA) today announced a subcommittee hearing to examine the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) oversight of the well-being of unaccompanied minors at America’s southern border, grant management by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

“The administration’s neglect in properly vetting the sponsors of unaccompanied minors who cross our southern border has led to the tragic exploitation of some of these children. Recently, multiple articles and an Inspector General report raised certain instances of negligence that we must address. This hearing will give our members a chance to hear directly from the department’s watchdog about the administration’s failure to protect unaccompanied minors as well as other critical issues, such as mismanagement of taxpayer funded grants by the NIH and CMS’ plan to unwind the public health emergency.”

Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General Christi Grimm is scheduled to testify in what will be her first appearance before the committee since she was confirmed by the Senate in February 2022. This hearing is the second part in a series of oversight hearings with inspectors general from the agencies under the committee’s jurisdiction. The inspectors general of the Department of Commerce, Department of Energy, and Environmental Protection Agency have previously testified

The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations hearing is titled “Insights from the HHS Inspector General on Oversight of Unaccompanied Minors, Grant Management, and CMS.”
