Chair Rodgers Announces Full Committee Markup on Protecting American Data and National Security from Foreign Adversaries

Washington, D.C. — House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) announced a Full Committee markup to consider H.R. 7521, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, and H.R. 7520, the Protecting Americans’ Data from Foreign Adversaries Act of 2024.

Chair Rodgers released the following statement on H.R. 7521, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act:

“Foreign adversaries like China pose the greatest national security threat of our time. With applications like TikTok, these countries are able to target, surveil, and manipulate Americans. H.R. 7521, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, ends this practice by banning applications controlled by foreign adversaries of the United States that pose a clear national security risk. I commend Select Committee on the CCP Chair Mike Gallagher and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi for their leadership on this bipartisan bill and look forward to advancing the bill this week.”

Chair Rodgers released the following statement on H.R. 7520, the Protecting Americans’ Data from Foreign Adversaries Act of 2024:

“Data brokers collect a stunning amount of sensitive information and data on Americans—from their physical and mental health, to when and where they’re traveling. Once collected, this sensitive information can be sold to anyone, including foreign adversaries like China. The days of data brokers surveilling Americans for our enemies should be numbered, and this important legislation will ensure that they are.”
