WASHINGTON, DC – Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee Chairman Bob Latta (R-OH) released the below statement after the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released its annual fatal traffic crash report for 2016.
“In 2016, over 37,000 thousand lives were lost on U.S. roads, up 5.6 percent from the previous year. NHTSA’s latest report found that distracted, drowsy, and reckless driving continued to increase as well. While fully self-driving cars have not yet hit our roadways, these vehicles hold the potential to substantially reduce the number of traffic fatalities caused by human error. The bipartisan SELF DRIVE Act helps promote the development of this incredible technology and makes sure self-driving cars are safe for consumers,” said Latta.
