E&C Republicans Demand Answers from TikTok over Terrorist and Antisemitic Content

Washington D.C. — House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), Communications and Technology Subcommittee Vice Chair Buddy Carter (R-GA), and 23 other Republican Committee members sent a letter to TikTok demanding answers regarding how the Chinese Communist Party is using the app as a tool to surveil and manipulate Americans.  From the letter: “ Disturbingly, millions of TikTok users have recently viewed videos glorifying Osama Bin Laden’s ‘Letter to America,’ which attempts to justify his horrific murder of 3,000 Americans in the September 11, 2001, attacks while also perpetuating ‘the antisemitic trope claiming the Jews ‘control your policies, media and economy.’” Key excerpts from exclusive reporting by FOX NEWS : “ A group of House Republicans is demanding more transparency from TikTok about how content is amplified and how much insight China has into those processes as accusations mount against the social platform that it’s boosting antisemitic videos. “‘On October 7, the Palestinian terrorist organization, Hamas, brutally attacked Israel and killed more than 1,400 people. Since this terrorist attack, disinformation related to the conflict has run rampant on your platform, stoking antisemitism, support, and sympathy for Hamas,’ they wrote to TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew. “The letter is being led by Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Ga. It comes just days after TikTok was under fire for facilitating a surge in viral videos expressing support for Usama bin Laden’s 2002 'Letter to America' written in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.” […] “National security hawks have been wary of TikTok’s connection to China, with its parent company ByteDance being based in Beijing.” […] “The lawmakers are demanding to know how many employees at TikTok have connections to ByteDance, how the platform screens for misinformation and anti-Israel content amid the conflict with Hamas, and how its algorithms are curated, among other queries. “‘Given that roughly half of TikTok’s U.S. user base is under 25 years old, American youth are being exposed to extremely violent and disturbing images and videos," they wrote. "This deluge of pro-Hamas content is driving hateful antisemitic rhetoric and violent protests on campuses across the country. The CCP has already co-opted your platform, and it seems TikTok and TikTok’s employees are resigned to becoming a mouthpiece for antisemites, terrorists, and propaganda.’” ICYMI: In October, Chair Rodgers called on multiple tech companies, including TikTok, to brief the Energy and Commerce Committee on their moderation policies regarding the spread of illegal content posted by Hamas. E&C Republicans Sound the Alarm on Biden’s Censorship Campaign

House Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and committee Republicans have been sounding the alarm on the Biden administration’s ongoing efforts to pressure Big Tech companies to censor speech it disagrees with and silence Americans. The actions taken by the Biden administration are alarming, un-American, and akin to the type of behavior we’ve seen from foreign dictators to destroy freedom and control speech.  “President Biden and his administration want to institutionalize censorship by pressuring Big Tech to silence Americans. The DHS disinformation board was just his latest attack on the First Amendment and free speech. I am glad to see these plans have been ‘paused’ and urge President Biden to permanently abandon his censorship mission. The answer to speech that we disagree with should always be more speech.”  July 2020 — 189 Republican Members of Congress urged the Biden administration to abandon their censorship mission and respond to inquiries regarding their coordination with social media companies to censor Americans.  March 2022 — Republican Leaders condemned the Surgeon General’s ongoing pressure campaign on Big Tech to silence Americans.  April 2022 — Leader Rodgers urged Democrats and President Biden to abandon their censorship mission and that the establishment of a ‘Disinformation Governance Board’ was un-American.” This week, the administration announced that it would be ‘pausing’ its efforts to establish a ‘Disinformation Governance Board’ that would attack and silence free speech online.  This board should have never existed in the first place.   Here are some reactions from E&C members. . @DHSgov announced today that their so-called 'Disinformation Board' will be put on the back burner after an outcry from those concerned about govt. censorship – including criticisms from civil liberties and human rights orgs. This is a win for Americans & the First Amendment! https://t.co/irOIre2G2M — U.S. Rep. Bob Latta (@boblatta) May 18, 2022 The so-called “Disinformation Governance Board” never should have seen the light of day in the first place. Disbanding it is good news for free speech, and the administration’s censorship mission should be scrapped once and for all. https://t.co/N2Mw1C9yli — Rep. Tim Walberg (@RepWalberg) May 18, 2022 This is great news for free speech and our Constitution. https://t.co/PjeYE91Hhi — Markwayne Mullin (@RepMullin) May 18, 2022 BREAKING: The Biden Administration has reportedly paused its Orwellian "Disinformation Governance Board" after facing heavy backlash. We are fighting back and winning! — Rep. Jeff Duncan (@RepJeffDuncan) May 18, 2022 WIN FOR FREE SPEECH https://t.co/RKqksJAgzJ — Buddy Carter (@RepBuddyCarter) May 18, 2022 A potential win for freedom-loving Americans! https://t.co/vAP34xcwwd — Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (@RepDLesko) May 18, 2022 RESULTS: President Biden’s “Disinformation Governance Board” is officially on hold. Sunk by what it was designed to suppress: dissention and mockery of elites. They’ll try to resurrect it though. https://t.co/bJjCN264in — Bill Johnson (@RepBillJohnson) May 18, 2022 B/c Americans called BS on the @DHSgov Disinformation Governance Board, the Biden Admin decided to "pause" it. Maybe the Admin should also listen to the American people and take steps to end #Bidenflation , the #BidenBorderCrisis , and the #BidenGasHike . — Michael Burgess, MD (@michaelcburgess) May 18, 2022 CLICK HERE to read more about E&C Republican solutions to protecting free speech.

E&C Republicans: The Democrats’ Price Fixing Will Lead to Shortages, Rationing, & Mile Long Gas Lines

Washington, D.C. — House Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and her Republican colleagues led debate against H.R. 7688, the Socialist Energy Price Fixing Act. Instead of taking responsibility for their radical policies that led to skyrocketing energy prices, Democrats are once again trying to shift blame for surging prices on “price gouging.” Democrats want to use the FTC to cover up the consequences of Biden’s tax and spend agenda and attack small businesses to take America one step closer to socialism. Bottom Line: Surging gas prices are not a result of price gouging, but from President Biden’s war on American energy production and jobs. The following are excerpts of remarks and highlights from the House floor from Republicans exposing the Democrats’ blame game and their lurch toward socialist energy price controls. LEADER RODGERS: “America is in crisis. There’s a dangerous baby formula shortage. Inflation is out of control. “Gas prices surpassed $4 a gallon in every state for the first time ever and are predicted to hit $6 a gallon this summer. “Let’s come together and unleash American energy. […] “Today, the majority is pursuing government price controls on energy prices while continuing to shut down American energy. This combination will only make prices and inflation worse. “This scheme comes directly from the playbook of socialist dictators. Look at places like Soviet Russia, Venezuela, North Korea. These are the countries that have imposed government price controls. Actually, the United States of America tried this in the 1970s. “We tried this approach, and the result? Shortages, rationing, mile long lines for gas. It was an economic and humanitarian crisis. “And now again, the majority wants to impose de facto government price controls.” […] “President Biden is doubling down as he continues to shut down American energy. “He placed a moratorium on new drilling, canceled the Keystone XL pipeline, supported canceling oil leases in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico, and this week, it was reported that he is moving to ease energy sanctions on Venezuela. “The United States of America is the leading producer of oil and gas. […] “Republicans have put forward solutions. We’ve introduced the American Energy Independence from Russia Act. I’m co-leading this legislation with the ranking member of Natural Resources, Bruce Westerman. “It would lower costs, protect our national security by flipping the switch and unleashing American energy. “Just this week, unfortunately, the Democrats blocked for the sixth time the vote on this legislation.” REP. KELLY ARMSTRONG (R-ND): “The irony of the situation is that House Democrats and the Biden administration are not on the same page. “A few months ago, I asked FTC—an agency that is supposed to be an independent commission—to investigate gasoline prices. “Three weeks ago, the House Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing where nearly every Democrat accused companies of price gouging, or even worse, war profiteering. They seem to have forgotten that fact that two of those companies have absolutely zero refining capacity, yet still were accused of this.” REP. BOB LATTA (R-OH): “This bill would task the FTC to act as the arbiter for determining if price gouging is occurring and then reset the prices, never mind the fact that the FTC has investigated gas prices for decades and has never determined that gouging is the reason for price fluctuations. “Since day one, President Biden has made every effort to undermine, avoid, and restrict oil and gas production in North America. He cancelled the Keystone XL pipeline, which would have transported 830,000 barrels of oil every day from Canada into the United States. He put a moratorium on leases for oil and gas exploration on federal lands, as he said he would during the 2020 campaign.” REP. BILL JOHNSON (R-OH): “The majority continues to blame ever rising gasoline prices on everything but the real source, their own policy failures. Americans know this all started on January 20th, 2021, with President Biden signing multiple anti-American energy executive orders on day one. “First Democrats blamed COVID for the increase in gas prices. Americans didn’t buy it. Then following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Democrats tried spinning it as ‘Putin’s Price Hike.’ That flopped too. Today, it’s ‘price gouging.’” REP. BUDDY CARTER (R-GA): “Pain at the pump isn’t a cause of the Biden Administration’s policies, it’s the intended effect. They’ve admitted it themselves! The higher gas prices climb, the more affordable electric vehicles and their green new deal policies become. “Rather than incentivizing innovation and helping America unleash its energy potential, this Administration is stripping away the working class’s purchasing power to strongarm their ‘rush to green’ agenda. […] “This is not the first-time government price controls on oil and gas have been tried. It was the 1970s, and it led to decreased production, massive shortages and rationing, and mile-long lines at the gas pumps.” REP. JEFF DUNCAN (R-SC): “You know these stickers of Joe Biden keep popping up on gas pumps all across the nation. Let me be clear, Joe Biden absolutely did that. He raised gas prices. “On the campaign trail, he told the American people he was going to kill the fossil fuel industries and he’s trying to do that.” REP. LARRY BUCSHON (R-IN): “On average, gas prices in Indiana are over 43% higher than they were this time last year. Yet today, my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are calling on their usual game plan on who to blame when gas prices get too high: ‘price gouging.’ “Let’s be clear. This isn’t remotely close to the culprit of why Hoosiers can’t afford filling up their cars. It’s been the numerous hostile policies of the Biden administration toward American energy producers.” REP. JOHN JOYCE (R-PA): “Instead of creating price controls that would lead to less production and massive gas shortages, we need to rely on the energy that lies beneath the feet of my constituents in Pennsylvania. Turn back on energy production here in America.  “We should unleash our energy producers to provide the resources that we need and turn away from socialist crackdowns that continue to hurt Americans more as time goes on. Price controls only lead to inflation, and with the worst inflation in 40 years right now happening, Americans cannot afford price hike legislation.” REP. STEVE SCALISE (R-LA): “It’s another week and another bill to try to divert attention away from what Joe Biden himself did to raise gas prices to the point where families can’t even afford to drive to work, can’t even afford to go to the grocery store to pay 15, 20% more for goods because of Biden’s inflation.” REP. BRETT GUTHRIE (R-KY): “The CEOs of the oil companies testified before a subcommittee of this committee that they weren’t price gouging. They testified under oath. So, we have what we need if they are price gouging for the administration to prosecute. But they’re not prosecuting.”  REP. DEBBIE LESKO (R-AZ): “The problem is that even Biden’s own Energy Secretary said, and I quote, ‘I’m not sure anyone is saying there is wholesale gouging.’ “Oh, Madam Secretary, yes, that is exactly what your Democratic colleagues are now claiming.” REP. GREG PENCE (R-IN): “I rise today in opposition to H.R. 7688, because all I hear about back home is inflation. I hear about inflation, inflation, inflation, and it’s not just gas prices.” Don’t miss these highlights: NOTE: House Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Bruce Westerman (R-AR) offered a motion to require President Biden to issue a five year off-shore oil gas leasing program. Democrats BLOCKED the program that would help flip the switch for more energy production. Leader Rodgers Appointed to the Conference Committee to Improve American Competitiveness and Beat China

Washington, D.C. — House Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) issued the following statement regarding the announcement of Energy and Commerce conferees who will be responsible for finding a compromise between the House’s United States Innovation and Competition (USICA) and the Senate’s U.S. Innovation and Competition (COMPETES) Acts of 2021.   “To beat China and secure U.S. economic leadership, we need to have an honest discussion about lifting tax burdens and removing costly regulatory and permitting barriers that are hampering American industries and their ability to innovate—especially those that pose significant challenges to American energy competitiveness and security. So far, USICA and the America COMPETES Act have instead prioritized more massive expansions of government subsidies and multi-billion-dollar command and control programs. While there is still uncertainty around the outcome of this legislation, one thing is certain - we will not beat the Chinese Communist Party by trying to outspend them. I look forward to joining my fellow conferees to address how the final bill can improve supply chain security and address the real barriers to our competitiveness.”  The Following Energy and Commerce Committee Republican members were appointed to the conference committee on USICA and the America COMPETES Act:  Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA)  Larry Bucshon (R-IN)  Buddy Carter (R-GA)  Jeff Duncan (R-SC)  Dan Crenshaw (R-TX)

ICYMI: E&C Republicans Urge Buttigieg to Address China-based Huawei's Threat to U.S. Autos

Washington, D.C.— Energy and Commerce Committee Republican lawmakers, led by Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), today urged U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to address recent and concerning reports regarding China-based technology company Huawei's growing access to the U.S. semiconductor technology.   As reported by   Reuters :  “A group of 13 Republican lawmakers on Thursday raised concerns about U.S. approval for Chinese telecommunications company Huawei to buy chips for its growing auto business.  “The lawmakers, on the Energy and Commerce Committee, asked U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a letter seen by Reuters if he was concerned ‘Huawei will look for a foothold in developing components for future vehicles in order to gather information on Americans and our transportation infrastructure.’  “Reuters reported in August that U.S. officials have approved license applications worth hundreds of millions of dollars for the company, which is on a U.S. trade blacklist.”  […]  “The Republicans, led by Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the ranking member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, said the United States ‘must not surrender to China and its efforts to dominate our high-tech sectors, including (autonomous vehicles).’  “The letter asked Buttigieg if he believes ‘Huawei intends to do with the automotive sector what it did to the communications equipment sector?’  “Huawei told Reuters in August it was ‘positioning ourselves as a new component provider for intelligent connected vehicles’ and to help automakers ‘build better vehicles.’”  CLICK HERE  to read the story on Reuters.   CLICK HERE  to read the E&C Republican letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.    The questions asked by members in the letter to Secretary Buttigieg included:  Should Huawei have the ability to purchase semiconductors for next generation vehicles? If yes, please explain.   According to a Reuters report, automotive chips are not generally considered sophisticated when compared to chips in other sectors. The report also refers to comments made by a Huawei spokesperson who said “[They] are positioning [themselves] as a new component provider for intelligent connected vehicles. . . .” Do you believe Huawei intends to do with the automotive sector what it did to the communications equipment sector?   How will the purchase of non-Chinese automotive semiconductor technology impact the economic pressure facing Huawei, both for the company in general and its 5G telecommunications division specifically? Are you concerned that such transactions ease the pressure on China’s supply chain for the automotive sector so it may further prioritize its state-sponsored goal in winning the race to 5G?   Are you concerned that Huawei will look for a foothold in developing components for future vehicles in order to gather information on Americans and our transportation infrastructure?   Will any component designed for an intelligent automobile licensed or manufactured by Huawei be prohibited from being used in automobiles destined for the U.S.?   Will you consult and coordinate with the other cabinet secretaries and share any concerns that efforts to support Huawei will ultimately benefit the CCP at the expense of U.S. jobs and the economy, including entrenching China’s state-sponsored supply chains?   Will you commit that neither you nor NHTSA will approve such technology transfers in the future?
